Wellness Wisdom with Dr Suresh Vassen: Exercise Smarter, Not Harder!
Exercise Smarter, Not Harder!
Our bodies are complex machines, and burning fat through exercise isn’t as straightforward as we might think. While everyone knows a lack of exercise is detrimental to health, new research shows that even activities like running a 5k may only burn around 300 calories.
This seems like a lot of effort for a small reward, especially when compared to simply skipping a snack.
On top of that, exercise can actually trigger the release of stress hormones like cortisol and insulin. These hormones can counteract our weight loss efforts by promoting fat storage, especially around the belly.
Additionally, exercise can disrupt our hunger hormones, making us feel hungrier after a workout. This can lead to cravings for unhealthy, calorie-rich foods that further hinder weight loss goals.
The good news is that there are ways to make exercise work for us, not against us. The key lies in breathing techniques. Nose breathing during exercise has been shown to activate calming nerve receptors and promote the production of alpha waves, leading to a more meditative state.
This can help us avoid the stress response that can sabotage our fat-burning efforts.
By focusing on mindful breathing, we can transform exercise from a stressful chore into a tool for achieving our weight loss goals.
