Three things you didn’t know about Jivamukti Yoga
With Dina Ghandour, Dubai-based certified Jivamukti teacher
Jivamukti is a physical, ethical, and spiritual practice, combining a vigorous hatha yoga, vinyasa-based physical style with adherence to five central tenets: shastra (scripture), bhakti (devotion), ahimsa (nonviolence, non-harming), nāda (music), and dhyana (meditation).
This integrated yoga method that brings back many of the traditional facets of yoga that have been stripped away in our modern practice. Here are three facts you didn’t know about Jivamukti…
1. Jivamukti , one of the first branded styles of western yoga, is adapted from the Sanskrit word Jivanmukta – Jiva (individual soul) and Mukta (liberation). The founders believed liberation, joy and lasting happiness is accessible right here right now.
2. Jivamukti yoga founders Sharon Gannon and David Life happen to also be disciples of Ashtanga guru Sri K Prattabhi Jois – they were also both artists!
3. Most Jivamukti teachers and students follow one of the yoga observances, Ahimsa , closely – with the idea that the way we live should allow for the freedom and happiness for all beings. That’s why most follow a compassionate, vegan diet.
